Soul retrieval is a spiritual healing practice developed by indigenous Incan shamans. Incan shamans view the world as consisting of three planes of existence: the upper world, the middle world, and the under world. What dominant American culture views as reality is what Incan shamans consider the middle world. The upper world holds all the potential of a person's life. According to Incan shamans, when we experience overwhelming trauma in our lives, parts of our souls flee to the under world for safety. Soul retrieval is a process of gathering and re-integrating those parts of ourselves that have fled, thereby promoting wholeness.
When soul retrieval is practiced, the practitioner/shaman journeys to the under world on behalf of the client, gathering information about the soul part residing there and the conditions the client needs to create in their life to reclaim that soul part in the middle world. Soul retrieval is structured around two sessions. The first session is the journey to the under world. The second session, a week or two later, a "mesa proxy" is performed, where the client is guided through the information gathered during the journey in order for the client to make meaning of the content.
Many soul retrieval clients do not view the process as literal, but as a method to uncover metaphors useful for transforming their life patterns and world view. Soul retrieval provides a mechanism for healing of deep spiritual wounds, many of which may not even be in the client's conscious awareness.
Tom completed a six-day intensive mastery workshop on soul retrieval, developed and conducted by The Four Winds Society. He has practiced soul retrieval with clients since that training.
